School Council Information

What do we do?

We are an advisory body. Our role as parents/guardians is to provide advice and make recommendations to the school and school board on matters of student well being and success.

Why is the Parent Council important

We help to inform decisions being made. These can be decisions that impact our children, school, and community. We also help to hold the education system more accountable.

What are some of the ways we can make a difference

We’re involved. We aim to engage as many parents/guardians as possible, and encourage your active involvement in the school community.

Along with the Principal, a Teacher/Staff Representative, a Student Council Representative and other community stakeholders, we discuss topics that are current, relevant, and specific to the school and our school board. For example, we might talk about upcoming school events, clubs or sports, local news and community initiatives as they impact our students, and important changes that can affect students and families at IE Weldon, resulting from changes to government or school board policies.

Our council does not typically participate in fundraising activities.

What can you expect when you come to a Council meeting?

Come prepared to find out more about IE Weldon and meet other engaged parents/guardians. Our first meeting is held in September. Our meetings are only 1 hour long in the evenings and are held every second month.  At every meeting, the Principal, Teacher/Staff and Student representatives each provide a brief report of issues related to student success and well being, and events occurring within the school.

There is no pressure. You can participate as much or as little as you like. If you cannot attend a meeting, but would like to stay informed, you can follow along on the school’s website at  https://iew.tldsb.on.ca/. Meetings are typically held at the school, but remote options to join can be made available if needed. We welcome parents/guardians with students from every grade level.

Who do I contact if I have questions, or want to join

Email us. The current school council co-chairs (interim until September 2023) are Sami Itani and Kim Hancock. They can be reached at [email protected]

If you do not have an email address, please call the school and let them know you would like to chat, and one of us will get in touch!
